Koi and a Turtle

I’m embellishing a Giclee on Canvas of my Original Oil Painting “The Joy of God’s Creation”. The unembellished Giclee is shown above. My collector, who owns the original painting, is giving this as a gift to a friend. Michael asked for a few changes to make the piece unique. Please remember, you may click on any of the images to see enlargements.

Using oils, the first change is to make the Orange Koi with white splotches, predominantly White. We’ll leave a couple of Orange spots on its head.

The Koi in the upper left corner of the painting is made completely Orange with white fins.

I’ve decided to change the Water Lily Blossoms to Pink. Since the Koi at the bottom of the painting has been repainted and is now mostly White I feel there needs to be a little more contrast and color. First I glaze the flowers with an oil wash of Permanent Rose + Liquin Original.

The glaze was allowed to dry overnight so I’m able to come back and paint the flowers with opaque mixes of Permanent Rose + White. The centers of the blossoms are accentuated with thick brush strokes of Cadmium Yellow Medium and Cadmium Lemon Yellow.

Michael thought it would be nice to add a Turtle on one of the Lily Pads. I have to say, in all of the paintings I’ve done in 32 years, I’ve NEVER painted a Turtle. This is fun! The first step is to sketch his basic shape with a thin oil wash of MUD (2 parts Ultramarine Blue + 1 part Alizarin Crimson) + Liquin Original.

The Turtle’s shell is painted with combinations of MUD + Cadmium Orange + Ultramarine Blue + White. Lines separating the individual Plates or Scutes of the shell are made with the MUD Wash that was used to sketch the basic outline of the Turtle in the previous step.

The Turtle’s head, feet and tail are added and we’re done! Compare this with the first image and notice how it’s changed. That’s why Jack came up with the term LIMITED ORIGINALS for my embellished Giclees on Canvas. Even though they are part of a very Limited Edition, each individual embellished Giclee is Uniquely Original!
