I am inexperienced with sculpting, whatever experience I have is from my High School Art Classes. So any advice would be extremely helpful.
I have been on this long journey of reading The Dark Tower. It’s a fantasy series from Stephen King. Although I am not a big fan of King’s other works, I do love The Dark Tower and how this story connects to all of his horror stories (mostly). There is this force of nature that holds the parallels of this multiverse called the Dark Tower. The Tower is held by 12 (hologram) beams but since it is a force of nature it has a natural texture like that of The Devil’s Tower or Tourmaline stone. In the book, I imagined it as this Dark soot-like colored tower that one day emerged from the land.
I know I want the tower to be 7ft tall and it will be displayed in a foyer on tile floor. So for sure I will be working in sections of the tower, starting with the base then working my up. So far I have decided that I will be starting the base with a heavy-duty Crafting Mailing tube with an 8in Diameter (at least). Then as I get to the top, use tubes of the same material but decreasing the diameter. I’m assuming the best thing I can do for the mountains surrounding the base is to use wire, paper mache, and foil. Run twisted wires through the base and form the wire into a rugged cone-like shape.
General look I am aiming towards but more exaggerated in terms of ruggedness.
Should I lay paper mache over the wires and then lay wadded up foil on top (rocky texture for the mountains) of that with another layer of paper mache? I’ve seen some artists make scaled mountains this way.
I’ve also seen a video of one sculptor using a couple of silicone molds for a stone-brick wall (he was making a Wizard’s Tower). He filled it with plaster and when it dried he cut them in sections and pasted it around the tower then filled the gaps later on ( I forgot what he used).
– My question is:
Since I want the tower to have a similar texture to the Devil’s Tower, would plaster be the best material? I’m all for using variants of a mold, I’m just not sure what would be the best material for a tower that tall and possibly heavy. Any suggestion for material would be great.
Also, would clay adhere to the tube well? If so, what “adhesive” would be best?
I will be painting the tower a soot-like tower, what would be the best paint for the material suggested?
Lastly, since this will be collecting dust and possibly grime (over time), I might have to end up using water to wash it off (at least the base). What would be the best material and paint for this?
Mediums/Materials I know I won’t use:
